Comrades Marathon South Africa
In 2005 I ran the 89Km Comrades Marathon (www.comrades.com). It was a fantastic experience which started with intensive training in late 2004. Thanks to the commitment of the many sponsors, both individuals and groups in 19 countries, I was motivated to finish the training and finally started in Pietermaritzburg in South Africa a race I will never forget. The warming up in the early morning around small fireplaces, the sunrise in the “Land of a 1000 Hills” among more than 13000 runners of all colors, the hi fives from the many handicapped albino children, the permanent cheers from the Zulu, Xhosa, South Africans and the finish … the best part was definitely crossing the finish line with the satisfaction of having collected USD 15,000 for Operation Smile in Peru. Thanks to the many sponsors who committed to a dollar amount per kilometer for Operation Smile, around 61 children with facial deformities could be operated. The multinational teams of plastic surgeons of Operation Smile changed their and their families’ lives. This project originated the idea to create a website, www.challengemenow.com. Now I am contemplating which challenge I will assume next.

En 2005 corrí la Comrades Maratón en Sudáfrica (www.comrades.com). Lo mejor de todo no fue completar los 89 kilometros, sino recaudar casi USD 15,000 para Operación Sonrisa en el Perú, gracias a más de 80 contribuyentes individuales y grupos de 19 países. Gracias a su compromiso y gracias a las vidas que podía potencialmente cambiar tuve la motivación de seguir entrenándome durante 8 meses, 6 días de la semana, hasta el día de la maratón. Este día corrí y corrí y finalmente terminé, realizando un sueño personal y posibilitando 61 operaciones de niños con una malformación facial congénita conocida como labio leporino y paladar hendido. Operación Sonrisa cambia la vida de los niños y de sus familias. Les recomiendo que revisen la presentación en la página web (www.operacionsonrisa.org.pe), es impactante. En base a este proyecto se creó la página web de www.challengemenow.com. Ahora estoy contemplando cual es mi siguiente reto.
